Week 6~ DO NOW - Hurricane
How hurricanes are formed?
Hurricanes come from warm water, typically hurricanes are only formed in tropical regions. These warm waters then evaporate this is fuel for the hurricane. Wind is also needed for a hurricane to form. Hurricanes not in tropical regions could be caused by wind blowing from a tropical region in the direction to another country. The warm water then starts to evaporate high in the air then begins to cool then condensed back to water droplets creating stormy clouds; the warm air keeps on rising upward the wind begins blowing in a circular way around a centre. The winds then gather some of the stormy clouds and the clouds spin around with the wind.
new information I didn't know..
- It is officially a hurricane when the wind speed reached 74mph
- The way we see the weather is weather satellites.
- The weather satellites check the earth every 10 minutes and 5 minutes in the USA.
- Hurricanes the are most popular is September.
-A hurricane belt is where the the places or islands most likely to get hit by hurricanes the most.
Why would this relate to what we are readying? (The Cay)
- This might relate to The Cay because the book is set around Curacao and Curacao never gets hit by hurricanes because this island is just out of the hurricane belt.
About The Cay. Chapter 1-5
Chapter 1: Phil was starting to discover what has happening with the war. Phil and Henrik (Phil's friend) were going around the island searching to see what was happening at sea. His mother was getting worried and wanted to go back to America before they get to close to the war or the war comes to them.
Chapter 2: Phil gets ready to leave Willemstad and say goodbye to his father and friends while on his way to America on the boat that will soon be the worst decision so far in the book.
Chapter 3: In chapter 3 Phil and his mothers boat get torpedoed and they get a life boat but Phil gets knocked unconscious and when he wakes up he is on an island with an old guy and a cat with his mum nowhere to be seen.
Chapter 4: Timothy creates a shelter for them with old clothes and branches. Also they go on a raft to fish but Phil is blind.
Chapter 5: There was an air-plane that could save them but Timothy was too late and they did not spot him .
Langosta ~ DO NOW week 5
Langosta. A langosta is a spiny lobster. Why would Langosta be good for on the cay ? The Langosta would be a good food source for you and easy to get, according to the video. How might all the aspects of Langosta be used to survive? This Lobster is not only a good food source it could be used to help fish for other food (used as bait). Also the lobster could be used as a weapon if used cautiously.
This video I watched was showing how this man caught some seafood with his hands/no equipment.
Why would it be difficult to live on a cay? ~ week 5) DO NOW
Why would it be hard to live on a cay? Living on a cay would obviously we difficult because you are basically stranded in an island surrounded by water. In most cases there is no super markets or shops in a cay but there could be. Reasons why it would be difficult to live on a cay....
1. surrounded by water.
2. basically no food.
3. it would be pretty lonely . Just you and the fish or sharks.
4. if it was a windy or stormy day you would get pretty drenched in the rain.
This is why living on a cay would be pretty difficult.

Point of view from The Cay - Diary entry.
Phillip:
Dear Diary,
It is around April 5th-6th. These past few days haven't gone to plan, everything was supposed to be alright but the opposite has happened. My boat was torpedoed and my mum is missing! I was suppossed to be safe now, living in america with my mother far away from the war. Before all of this crazy mess happened I was living happily on a small island with my family in Willemstad but now I am on this island, I have no idea where it is! but now with this old man. My head has been aching ever since we got here but Timothy says it will be alright, (Timothy is the old man) I don't know if I trust him though.
Hi, It is a few days later from when I am writing this. Well actually Timothy is writing this for me because I can't see anymore apparently I was looking at the sun for too long according to him. But at least my head is better! Timothy says the blindness with go away within a few days, well that is what happened to someone else he said. I hope.
Timothy:
Dear Diary,
Sometime in April. Well, we are officially stranded on this island probably near the Caribbean and we are going to see a ship pass by soon hopefully. I'm stuck with this young boy who has an injured head and he doesn't like me very much. I've made a shelter so Phillip and I can be sheltered from the sun because it is uncontrollably hot here on this island.
Hello, It is me again. Phillips head is getting better it is the first day his head is not hurting but he is complaining about his eyes - maybe he was just looking at the sun for too long. I told him not to!

Social Justice
Social Justice is what we have been learning about this term. Social Justice means: The view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities. I think that is very important that we learn about this because not many people are educated about situations that are going on in this world today and in the past.
The Asian Community.
This community has experienced more hate during the year of 2020/2021, Asian hate become 1900% higher than the other years. They faced prejudice stereotypes not just in 2020 but other years as well. "Most Asian representation in Hollywood up until around 5 years ago has been pretty uninspired and stereotypical" - Simu Liu. The community wants us to know that (most) Asian characters onscreen are shown in a stereotypical way and that themselves is not truly how this community would act. Asian characters onscreen shown non-stereotypical capacity normalizes their existence and their culture. I think that we should get more education around their/every culture to learn more about everyone not just seeing "cultures" through screens.
The Muslim Community.
This community may experienced hate and being bullied. Zeinab is one of may people that have experienced this. Zeinab was being bullied at school and hiding her true self. She had been called a refugee, an immigrant, a terrorist, asked if she is in ISIS, had bomb ‘jokes’ thrown at her up and down. Zeinab is one of many people that have been treated like this. Her and her family moved to New Zealand to get a better life and that is what they should've received. This community wants us to know that, "Why can’t we all be seen as one? Because no matter what race, what culture, what country, what colour, and what religion you may have or may be, the one thing we all have in common is that we are all human beings. We are all the same species, and doesn’t it sound stupid to be against your own kind?" - Zeinab.
The Pacific Community.
This community just like the other communities has faced the feeling of being hurt. In the Early 1970s the New Zealand government at that time were forcing the Pacific community out of their own homes and were treated horribly. New Zealands economy was starting to go down in the 1970s and the government was blaming it on the Pacific community. That is why they were treating them like this. The Government at the time was discriminating them and then majority of New Zealanders were seeing this community as jeopardising their financial security of their life during when all of this was happening. the Dawn raids is when the police would go to a house they knew Pacific people lived at and they would wreck their house and take them to jail. I think this was a horrible decision and why would they do it in the first place.
It is so hard to think that these communities were treated like this in New Zealand. New Zealand is a place that people come to feel/ be safe not to be treated horribly. Everyone should be aware of this and treat everyone respectfully just like how you would like to be treated themselves. New Zealand and the rest of the world should be safe for everyone, it is our home for the rest of peoples lives no matter if you like it or not and this is why everyone should feel at home no matter what country they are in.
