Chemistry | Concentration and Dilution

Today we are learning about Concentration and Dilution. Concentration has more particles and dilution has less particles.  

Concentration is a measure of how much solute had been dissolved in to the solvent/how much it has been dissolved into a liquid. 

We can measure in two ways: 

1. How dilute something is (how weak it is)

2. How concentrated something is (how strong it is)

Dilution is when we make something less concentrated. We make things weaker by diluting it. 

Our experiment is making a Dilution Series. 5ml water into 5 of the test tubes and 10ml into one of the test tubes. A dilution series is when we move one of the liquids from one into the other tubes. We will be putting a piece of crystal potassium into one of the test tubes. 

The purple crystal we used was called potassium Permanganate which was the solute. The Solvent was Water. 

What happened:

While we transferred 5ml of the last liquid into the next test tubes, the solution went from concentrated to very diluted. The colour got less and less because it was more dilute. Our solution was the mixture of the crystal and water. The more we took out the liquid from the other test tube it was more dilute because of the more liquid that was in the next test tube. The start of the test tube was concentrated and the end went more dilute. 

Filtering

Today we will be testing out to see if two liquids can separate by filtering. Filtering is separating things based on their size. Filtering only works until a certain point, if the particles are the same size they will not separate that is insoluble. Our goal is to make a solution then separate the solution from a precipitate. I think they will separate if they are different sizes but I do not think they will separate if the particles are the same size. The copper liquid is blue and there is a colourless liquid we will be mixing together. The method we will be doing is filtering the two different liquids from a funnel separated by a filter paper into the conical flask. When we mixed the sodium carbonate and copper sulfate together it became a brighter blue. We were able to separate it because the blue was the solid. They were different sizes so the experiment was successful. When we put the filter paper into the funnel and poured our solution in the blue was separated from the clear liquid. The clear liquid was pouring out from the filter while the blue was staying inside the filter. I think the blue separated from the clear liquid because they were different sizes and because of the filter paper separates different sized particles. Our colourless liquid became sodium sulfate and the blue precipitate became the opposite liquid. The Blue became a thick consistency. 

DISSOLVING

We did a small experiment in chemistry today. We tested what type of water would sugar dissolve in fastest. We used one cold beaker filled with 100ml of water and the other two filled with warm water. One we mixed and two we left. 

4 things that are soluble and insoluble in water: 

1. sugar 

2. salt

3. cordial 

Three ways we can speed up dissolving:

1: mixing it 

2: using warmer 

3.heating it up

The warm water was the fastest to dissolve because we mixed it and heat makes the particles move faster. 

-solute = the solid you are trying to dissolve

-solvent = liquid

-solution - the mixture created

-soluble = can dissolve 

-Insoluble = does not have the ability to dissolve

BIO Homework | Rat dissection

Last week we did another dissection. This time we dissected a rat. The rat was albino which means it had no pigmentation and the eyes were red. We dissected a rat so we could learn more about the body and organs. I didn't necessarily enjoy it nor not. The reason I  didn't enjoy it because of the "obvious". 

Paragraph

In Hurumanu 1 we watched a movie called Hunt For The Wilder People. Our class has been working on how to put a paragraph together properly.  The first task we did wasn't as specific as the one we have done now and the second task is more focused on explain than the last paragraph. We wrote 2 different paragraphs so we can get better and learn to see whats fits and what doesn't. 

My paragraph:

How has Ricky changed during the movie Hunt For The Wilderpeople and why was his change important? Ricky was a young, lonely standoff-ish boy who had no family at the start of the film but then he started to warm up to his new family three quarters through the movie.  The audience feels like an older parent or sibling watching Ricky grow up and change how he acts the film. This change was important because it shows that Ricky isn’t as bad as they make him out to be anymore and people watching may even feel like the way Ricky was and the audience can feel related to someone.The film effects used on the perspective of Ricky’s change throughout the movie were from other people point of view to see Ricky change if we were there in that moment.  My opinion of the film is that the movie ties quite well together and it is interesting. Ricky’s personality was filmed quite well and thought out precisely.

Throughout the sessions of learning how to write paragraphs correctly I learnt they ways to put sentences together in the right way and the sentences link. This has helped my writing because when I write a "story" I can write the right way and do it correctly. My Favourite part of the film study was mainly everything I don't really have a favourite I think the work was reasonably fun to do. 

Heart Dissection / Bio

 Heart Dissection

Today we will be dissecting a sheep heart to identify all the parts of a heart. We will be able to label the hearts parts and see how the heart may work in many ways. We may also see the veins, arteries, septum and atrium ect.

The method we used: We cut down the right hand side first and saw an atrium, ventricle, valves and arteries. Then we cut down the left side. Then through the middle.

What I have learned/ the results from the dissection: I have learned all of the different parts and been able to identify most parts of the heart, left side of the heart is thicker and what the arteries look like.

Dissecting the heart was interesting I have never done that before. It wasn't fun nor disgusting, it was pretty average. It wasn't what I expected the heart was very different then what I had in mind.
