Social media.

In Health we were set a task that required us to choose a topic and evaluate the situation. The topic we chose was The effects of Social Media. Firstly we had to chose 6 Big Questions and follow the instructions to answer them. From there the 6 big questions we chose were...

Why would someone be strongly against social media,

What are the long term effects of social media,

Who is responsible for the effects of social media,

How do the effects begin,

When and how did this become an issue,

What are the mental effects of social media.

From these questions, we have made an essay that includes the work we have been doing these past months.

Next time I will work more constantly and be more creative with our activities. The thing we are most proud of is our essay.

Our planning sheet

Effects of social media

1.When and how did this become an issue?

Social media media became an issue when people started to over use social media platforms and started to misuse it.

Examples of misuse of social media: sending/posting inappropriate content, slandering, criticizing, cyber bullying, being mean, fake news, etc.

(there are also good things on social media)

2.Who is responsible for the effects of social media?

We believe that the people/person responsible for the effects of social media are the users themself, because most people know the effects of social media and yet still use it quite a lot. It is the user's choice to use how-ever much time they spend on social media and what activities they do. Regardless of the outcome the people who still use social media to a certain extent face consequences/effects of social media.

3.Why would someone strongly be against social media?

There are a few reasons why someone could be strongly against social media.

The main reason is because social media affects our wa hauora(wellbeing).

Because of social media people start to feel insecure about themselves, how they look, act, speak and about what content is posted.

4. How do the effects begin?

The effects of social media can usually begin through social media influencers, friends, other peoples opinion on social media and from the feed that we see.

5.What are the mental effects of social media?

Social media affects our feelings. Social media can cause trauma because there are lots of things that happen on social media, there are things that are inappropriate, heartbreaking, cruel, disgusting, and more.

Some of the effects can be:

  • Depression

  • Self esteem issues

  • Addiction(only relying on social media)

  • Self harm

3 ways to improve and manage the effects of social media.

Strategy 1:

Setting a time limit on your social media usage.

Taha hinengaro, taha whanau, taha tinana, taha wairua. The strategy will improve all areas of your well being because…

Mental: you will have more time to grow your brain out of social media usage .

Physical:Because you get out more and not just living through your phone.

Family:Because you socialize face to face. Verbal communication.

Spiritual: because we will concentrate on our thoughts and emotions and try to get a better understanding of then (emotions//self)

If you have control over your thoughts and emotions, setting a time limit on your social media usage could last short term because you can control yourself and not be addicted as much to social media. It would be the opposite for the long term.

You are responsible for your own actions and responsible if the strategy might not work .

Strategy 2:

Get involved in extracurricular activities.

Physical and mental.

Physical: being physically involved in sports, etc.. helps your brain grow, reduce anxiety and help you become more “fit”. It is a way to have your mind away from all the ruckus happening on social media.

Mental: Studies show that getting involved in extracurricular activities helps your brain progress and function better.

This strategy is a long term effect because you could enjoy the activity and become more involved, which would help you physically and mental.

You are responsible because you decide what activity you choose and how much you contribute to it.

Strategy 3:

Having time for yourself and catch up with others

Mental: By doing this you will build more knowledge

Family: visiting family and friends. This will help strengthen your relationships and improve your social abilities.

Spiritual: getting to know yourself and focusing on your beliefs.

Physical: getting involved in activities that involve family/group work

This is a long term strategy in which you need to remember that you need to take care of yourself(believe in yourself and your beliefs) and not let go of people that care for you and that you care for.

Everyone is responsible for their own actions and if you don't make time for yourself  or to hang out with friends/socialize it is your problem to fix it.
